Flying FOOLZ Meeting Minutes
February 9, 2016 at Beef O'Brady's
Attendees: Jim & Pat Connell, Steve & Barb Flynn, Karen (Peaches) Jones, Bill Sharpe, Vic Chewning, Dan Reynolds, Steve Bensinger & Sue Vartanian
Meeting called to order 7:45pm.
Treasurer Report from Vic – Our January Fly-in netted $201.29; current bank balance is about $4547. Other recent expenses were the EAA dues. FOOLZ annual club membership dues ($12) and EAA membership numbers should be paid to Vic Chewning. [Make checks payable to EAA Chapter 1489. There are also memberships for Associate (not an EAA member, not allowed to vote, $12 annual dues) and Youth (associate member under 18, Young Eagle/student pilot, $5 annual dues).]
January Fly-in review: Members discussed whether the two rented portable toilets justified their expense. Barb thought that they were useful at this large fly-in, but one might be enough for the October fly-in. The group agreed that renting portable toilets would not be necessary for Young Eagles Day.
Young Eagles event February 20th (10am-3pm) [Rain Date Feb 27th] – Peaches made a motion to give our Scholarship recipient Zach Stokes a check at the Young Eagles Day since he had done his solo. Part of the intent is to show the new Young Eagles that our club wants to help them learn to be a pilot.
Membership reviewed the scholarship allocation rules (from January 2015):
- $300 towards flight instruction when:
- the student (minimum age 16) has been selected for a scholarship (by criteria determined by the club), and
- has become a member of the Flying FOOLZ Chapter 1489. (Membership may be Youth, Associate, or Full Member.)
Payment made to instructor or school when proof of training has been submitted.
- $400 when student has soloed
Payment made to instructor or school when log book entry or certification by instructor has been submitted.
$300 when student has passed written exam
Payment made to instructor or school when copy of certificate has been submitted.
The scholarship funds will be available for 3 calendar years.
Motion amended have the club write a $400 check to Zach's flight school (for future training) and to use a large “Scholarship Recipient” check for the presentation. Motion passed.
Peaches informed us that there are 26 Young Eagles pre-registered for this month and that the committee is not accepting any more applications. She has divided the children into 4 groups and published a rotation schedule for each station: Flying, Gary's flying machines, Steve B's hangar (building a plane), and Pre-flight.
Peaches also has this suggested routine for the pilot: pick up Young Eagle at registration table, pre-flight with YE, fly with YE, get photo with YE by plane after landing, pick up certificate, debrief YE and parent, sign log book and certificate; repeat.
Steve B. brought up the subject of security checks that the EAA wants for all adults working at Young Eagle events. The membership was concerned about the method used to submit personal information and wondered about its security. Several members said that they would not go through that background check – even if it meant not participating in the Young Eagles program.
Jim mentioned that Dick Love, who was an instructor during WWII, wants to make a Young Eagles donation to the scholarship fund.
Fly-ins and other events – There is a safety seminar at Ocala on February 11th. There is a fly-in breakfast in Punta Gorda on February 13th.
Meeting adjourned 8:41 pm.
The next meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, March 8th 7pm at Coyote Rojo.
Future Fly-Ins (from FlyingFOOLZ.org website with calendar):
